I am young. I am Black. I am a stagehand. And, I'm awkward.
I just graduated with a theatre degree and I trying to make it mean something.. Being Black period is tougher than most people know. Being Black in show business, when it's fine if you're an actor or singer or rapper. But backstage? We are still very poorly represented upstage of the proscenium line. Working with a crew that is almost always made up of white men (who mostly have no idea what to do with a smartass ((double entendre)) black girl) well it's trying, and I want to make it, but that means playing the game and squashing the thug in me till I'm cut. But I am sure I am not alone. So: Follow for fun. Submit your own awkward experiences as a stagehand. United, we stand; divided- we'll probably slap somebody :)
